SCRUM is great… No really, it is. Whenever I start working with a new team or just do a retrospective / knowledge sharing with Scrum veterans it is always useful to remind everybody why we are doing Scrum. Here are some of the benefits (I categorized them using Scrum role perspective)
As a team member I like Scrum because
- There are ‘No managers’ (at least not the traditional kind of managers, doing the old-school heavy micromanagement)
- We (the folks in the team) use our expertise to decide “how” to deliver / do a story
- We (the folks in the team) only commit to what we can deliver
- Each team member improve his/hers expertise
- There are no unnecessary documentation, actions/processes we must write/do/follow
- My team will always help and support me
- We (the folks in the team) see the result of our work as soon as possible and we receive the credit for it
As a Product owner I like Scrum because
- I don’t need to manage the experts
- I have a team to rely on, to support me and share responsibilities
- My top priority (most important) items are delivered fast
- I can change priorities sooner than later
- I need to decide as late as possible
- The progress and the risks are visible on a daily basis
As a Scrum Master I like Scrum because
- It’s great to support a highly efficient agile team
- I don’t need to bury myself in documentation (usually not used/read by anybody else)
- Agile is an extraordinary philosophy and is challenging to master
- I don’t have to embarrass myself anymore by (old-school) managing smarter / more experienced folks than me
