Eleven rules of life (for kids and students)

A story about Bill Gates given speech in front of little students and presented golden rules of life circulates the Web for a long time. The truth actually is that Bill Gates has never given speech for those school students, neither he has written the life rules. Nevertheless, the rules are really good and I would like to express my thoughts on them.

Let’s go:
1. ”Life is not fair - get used to it!”
- I love this one. This statement saddens and brings joy at the same time. If life was fair – you would have a fixed place in it and no other possibilities at all. Your skills and potential would be measured and then you will just get what you deserve. Instead, life is not fair and the possibilities are limitless. You could fall very hard or fly very high – it’s really up to you.

2. ”The world won't care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.”
- “To accomplish” is definitely the lead motivator in life.

3. ”You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice president with a car phone until you earn both.”
- Life is all about the journey. We need goals set high enough to keep the journey going as long as possible...  or actually forever.

4. ”If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss.”
- Very nice one... Remember – ”life is not fair”. Sometimes you will have a boss less capable, intelligent and resourceful compared to yourself... but you still need to keep going and do your best.

5. ”Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: they called it opportunity.”
- Every job/task is an experience and brings possibilities to refine your skills.

6. ”If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault; so don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them.”
- And you will mess up a lot. So get used to it. Learn from mistakes and improve yourself... and learn to enjoy the ride.

7. ”Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent's generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.”
- Respect your parents. Their life wasn't easier than yours is. Still they managed to help you and invested a lot in you. If you have parents who love you and care about you - you are so lucky.

8. ”Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they'll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.”
- Another great one. In real life you pay the price for your mistakes (and even for your accomplishments). And sometimes the price is very high. So be careful, think and plan and then be brave enough to take risks.

9. ”Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you "FIND YOURSELF". Do that on your own time.”
- Be very well organized. It is probably the best skill you could acquire in life.

10. ”Television and video games are NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.”
- Real life is full of things you are not going to like at all. There are two possible ways to approach these. Look at them as challenges and opportunities to prove yourself or just give up and go in a different direction. I would definitely recommend going with the first choice... it builds up your character.

11. ”Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.”
- Every person has strengths and weaknesses, so respect people. You could learn some good lessons from your nerd-boss and use them to your advantage.
